Keds, the Aftermath
Sunday, June 28, 2009 11:40 PM

These were my Keds, about two-thirds through my trip. It wasn't Hong Kong that made them dirty, but Taiwan and Yunnan province. I didn't want to clean them until I returned to Canada, but I couldn't deal with how filthy they looked so I dipped them in some soap & water prior to Seoul.
PS. Sorry, I didn't mean to pull a disappearing act. I seem to have sustained an injury on my bum (who does that?!) which makes sitting difficult (which makes using a computer difficult).

I always waiver between wanting to keep the memories associated with something that grew grubby (especially on a trip) but my natural inclination towards hyper cleanliness.

I always throw my converse or vans slip ons into the washer. So far they held up fine and always look like new after it :)

Ooh I've always wanted to go to HK! How is it?
I like the white Keds a little bit dirty, looks more natural.

My mom used to always get annoyed when I'd pick out white shoes. But they always look so cool! Is there anything you'd like me to send back from Hong Kong? (not trying to rub it in, promise)

I do too, but they were just way too dirty to be charming. I know the photo doesn't quite capture the dirtiness of the shoes! Plus I stepped in some pretty gross things so they needed a good wash!

HK was great! Though a bit humid.
I agree, they look too new when they're perfectly white, but my Keds were gross by the time I washed these.

Just for that, you'll be receiving a list that's a mile long. Nah, I have my own personal shopping & mailing service in HK. Thanks, though.
& my mom used to get annoyed at me for buying white anything -- I'm such a klutz. Luckily there's things like Spray & Wash now.

I just had to retire some keds. They become kind of unwashable eventually...

i love the look of lovingly used shoes. hehe.
but i definitely throw my fabric shoes into the wash more than once.
after awhile they always have a washed out look.
also, on a side note - i love your blog. i've been following forever, ive just never commented before which i realised is not a good thing..

Oh, too bad about the injury. Hope you heal up quickly!
How do you properly clean these things? I have a pair of dirty white Keds myself.

Are you stretching? Yoga could be really helpful - not any old kind - try Iyengar. It's all about structural stability and they'll make sure you start in a beginner class. It's a feature of the methodology.

A little bit of grit shows character, right? But it's hard to resist the urge to clean.
There are a lot more injury-prone muscles than people think, so it's not that strange. Hope you'll feel better soon.

i love those dirty keds!
my only problem with keds is how they hold odor when one wears them without socks!

Yeah, I think I should stick mine back in the washer. I tried using some bleach on it, but that made it splotchy. Thanks for delurking!

I stuck mine in the washer and that seems like the popular method judging from the comments I've received so far!

I've been doing some simple stretches -- when I can. Today's the first day I've been able to actually walk without looking like I'm about to topple over (bad limp). I'm beginning to think weather is affecting the healing process! On Sunday, it wasn't raining (up here), and the pain was tolerable. Yesterday it was raining and I wanted nothing more then to rip my leg off because it hurt badly. Right now it isn't raining (yet)... although maybe the fact that I upped my dose of Aspirin has something to do with it. haha.

I think they show that you had an awesome time in Taiwan! White shoes are terrible for getting dirty aren't they? I've recently bought two new pairs and I wore one today and I reverted to being a child and checking if my new shoes were scuffed yet!
