Hong Kong Love Friday, May 01, 2009 2:33 PM

Hong Kong and I will soon be reunited. I look forward to shopping and the photographing, but you can bet the first thing I will do upon deboarding the plane is head to the nearest street stall to indulge in some curry fish balls and papaya milk. They just don't taste the same in Toronto.

The photos in this post were taken during my six month stay in 2004 and my five week visit in 2007.

Wonderful pictures--it will be exciting to see what you capture this time around.

Oooh, I'm so jealous! When do you go? We had a layover in Hong Kong on our way home from Thailand and it looked AMAZING. Probably a little too expensive for our budget, though.

The more I see your photography the more talented I see you truly are. These are breathtaking! My favorites are the bicycle, pink room and the baby blue door. I would frame those in a heartbeat.

Thank you very much.

Thank you. Hopefully I'll have time to concentrate on some photography. Last time I was there I didn't take many shots I actually liked.

In a few days! HK can be expensive for shelter (although there are lots of hostels). Food & shopping can be cheap though, especially if you eat local cuisine! There are some shops that have bowls of wonton noodles for as low as $10 HKD ($1.30 USD). Although, it's not as cheap as Thailand.

Thank you. The pink room had sort of become my signature image for a while after I shot it in 2004. I went back to the same location in 2007, but the structure had been torn down and rebuilt. I took it as a sign to move on!

Joyce | 2009-05-01 06:38 PM | Reply

Beautiful pictures. It's like a different side of HK that tourist hardly sees. Have a wonderful trip and I can't wait to see more photos!

yulanda replied to Joyce | 2009-05-01 06:56 PM | Reply

Thank you. I decided to throw in a couple of touristy pictures in this post just because it was beginning to be too one-sided, if that makes sense!

Thank you.

yulanda replied to Eunice | 2009-05-01 06:57 PM | Reply

Will do! It seems like I'm missing every one, once again.

Alice | 2009-05-01 07:06 PM | Reply

gorgeous photos, as always. you always seem to make the ordinary extraordinary! the simplest things always seem so amazing.

it seems like this summer is the summer where EVERYONE'S going somewhere! a couple of my friends are also going to Hong Kong, and in fact, they both found out that they were actually leaving on the same day (may 4) on the only flight that day! so crazy!

Chester | 2009-05-01 07:53 PM | Reply

Your photos are gorgeous!

yulanda replied to Alice | 2009-05-01 08:43 PM | Reply

Thank you.

Well, now your friends will have some company on the flight over! I've never had the luck of traveling to the same place at the same time with friends (not counting the trips we go on together, of course).

Thanks!

ohh my goodness amazing, amazing photos.

i'm going to be traveling quite a bit (relatively speaking...as in relative to the other years of my life in which i've spent close to zero time traveling) and i can only hope to take even ONE photo as stunning as these. GOOD JOB DUDE, can't wait to see more :D

ohphilippa | 2009-05-02 01:34 AM | Reply

i've never made it that far north in se asia, but i'd love to go someday. you lucky thing...

greenjeans | 2009-05-02 02:59 AM | Reply

So green with envy right now. I don't know how you managed to get such great shots, I would have been too tired from overeating.

ps. that Beckel Canvas co. is really awesome about customizing too. They added a few leather reinforcements for like 3 dollars for someone.

SRR | 2009-05-02 03:21 AM | Reply

Gosh, that vintage-looking bike looks gorgeous on that "No Posting" wall. The left/right sign is just gorgeous. You really have a good eye for interesting scenes. Can't wait to see the pics from your trip. Enjoy!

yulanda replied to ohphilippa | 2009-05-02 03:36 AM | Reply

I hope you'll be able to fulfill that desire someday!

yulanda replied to greenjeans | 2009-05-02 03:38 AM | Reply

haha, I had to learn to pace myself. Afterall, the first time I went there I was there for six months. I didn't want to turn into a blimp.

That's awesome about Beckett Canvas Co. I was looking at the sizes and wish they had something a bit smaller. I like big bags, but they're like luggage bags (save for the totes). I want a canvas everyday bag that's sturdy enough for a DSLR because leather is so heavy. Maybe I'll find something in HK.

yulanda replied to SRR | 2009-05-02 03:39 AM | Reply

Thank you! Hopefully this trip is what I need to be re-inspired with my photography.

missmilki | 2009-05-02 05:13 AM | Reply

Those are really beautiful photos! I can't wait to see what you come back with this time. I was in Hong Kong a few years ago but just for a few days - I'd love to go for a little longer next time. Enjoy your trip! :)

ooh! how exciting! i cannot wait to see more of your photographs! and your loot!

Anh | 2009-05-02 08:56 AM | Reply

Love your pictures. My favorite would have to be the first picture. It made me think of the movie based off of Jimmy Liao's book, "Turn Left, Turn Right".

Someday I too would like to visit Hong Kong, but in the mean time have fun and show us what you see =)

Amelia | 2009-05-02 04:19 PM | Reply

I love the urban feel of these pictures. The first one is funny :)

Winnie | 2009-05-02 07:51 PM | Reply

Love these photos!
My last post had a bit about HK too. I miss it, especially spending days aimlessly wondering in and out of super air-conditioned stores and having dim sum with my grandparents. I would love to stay for 6mths...the longest I've stayed has only been for a month at a time! Jealous of your impending visit! My aunts have moved to Causeway Bay so I intend to visit sometime soon!

Winnie | 2009-05-02 07:55 PM | Reply

Also, I can't figure out what those red things are, are they salted duck egg yolks....or something completely different like desserts?

ellen | 2009-05-02 08:28 PM | Reply

i might be heading up hk sometime in june! i wonder if the summer shopping is good. haha

yulanda replied to missmilki | 2009-05-02 11:06 PM | Reply

Thank you! A few days is definitely not enough time.

yulanda replied to Lexie | 2009-05-02 11:08 PM | Reply

Haha, I can't wait to shop :D

yulanda replied to Anh | 2009-05-02 11:29 PM | Reply

Thank you! I know which movie you're talking about, though I've never seen it -- is it good?

yulanda replied to Amelia | 2009-05-02 11:44 PM | Reply

Thank you! They're all over the place in HK. I actually find it helpful since they drive on the other side of the road and I always check the wrong side before crossing.

yulanda replied to Winnie | 2009-05-02 11:49 PM | Reply

Thank you! They are indeed salted egg yolks.

CB, nice! I don't know my way around the island very well. I'm always in Kowloon! The last time I went I stayed with my relatives in Tsim Sha Tsui (they lived on Granville Road, such a great location) for a week before heading to a serviced apartment for a month. Anyway, when I was there for six months it was for an exchange through my school. That was my first time there.

yulanda replied to ellen | 2009-05-02 11:51 PM | Reply

Don't go in June, go in May! :P

K | 2009-05-03 04:40 PM | Reply

Have a wonderful trip, Yulanda. Will you be posting from Hong Kong? What are you more excited for, the food or the shopping?

yulanda replied to K | 2009-05-04 12:44 AM | Reply

I plan to, but we'll see if it actually happens, because I planned to blog from NY and clearly that didn't work out!

Hmm, tough call.
