Many Are Called Monday, April 27, 2009 12:08 AM

Since I mentioned Walker Evans in my previous post, I thought I'd share some images from his subway series for those who may not be familiar with his work. He shot hundreds of photos on the New York City subway between 1936 to 1941 with a camera hidden in his coat. Eventually the photographs were edited into a book titled, Many Are Called, published in 1966. In 2004, the book was re-issued and that is the copy these images come from.

I really like these photos, but I hadn't seen the book before. I like the stark design.

Thanks for posting these. I always hear a lot about Walker Evans in my photography class, but his pictures are hard to find online. I love that he hid the camera in his coat.

The book said the lens peeked through a button hole.

Oooh, beautiful. Check out Fructzwerg's most recent post, if you haven't already. She mentions us very favourably...

These are great. The black and white gives the images a haunting feel.

Oh my gosh, I want this! Between the fashion and the candid aspect, I could spend days pouring over these shots.
