A Black Issue
Wednesday, August 13, 2008 8:16 PM

Earlier this week, I stood inside International News on Front Street trying to decide the fate of my wallet: lunch for the rest of the week or the July 2008 issue of Vogue Italia ($37.29 after taxes). In the end I couldn't resist the lure of the elusive Black Issue. Even the store clerk knew it was special because he told me it was the only one he had.

Vogue Italia covers photographed by Steven Meisel.
Ironically, like many others have pointed out, most (if not all) of the ads within feature white models. Politics aside, there is some wonderful photography going on inside the pages.

Pretty imagery captured by Dusan Reljin.

I love the shadow play here done by Steven Meisel.

I am so pleasantly surprised to see what a huge demand there is for this issue. Hopefully the industry noticed likewise...
BTW, how come Grace Jones never ever ages?

Yeah, though I find it sad that there is a need for a Black Issue to make a point in the industry.
Maybe because she's Grace Jones? :)
