Hemming Pants
Thursday, June 26, 2008 7:15 PM

Last Thursday, I bought a pair of skinny black trousers from Club Monaco ($39, marked down from $139!). I plan to wear them mostly with heels, but I have no clue how short to hem them. I usually wear flats with pants so when it comes to hemming pants for heels, I have no clue where the hem should fall. What is a good pant length?

You know, I think it would be helpful to see the rest of the pants to answer this question. So much has to do with how they fall. In general, I like to have a slight break at the ankle - but not super long (no dragging!) but with skinnys, sometimes a bit of a short look is better. I like the length you've shown here, as long as it works from the top...

Sorry for the low quality photo, but hopefully this photo helps. I know, you can't see the details but it's so hard photographing black especially since I was lazy and used a point & shoot.

I actually think you chose a really good length. Maybe it could be a quarter of an inch longer (but that might just be my take from the photo). If you hem them at that length but get the seamstress to leave a little bit of fabric to go longer, if necessary, I think you'll be great.

To be honest, I was just randomly pulling it up to give an approximate idea. So I'll play with the extra quarter inch before hemming them, or rather, before my mom aka seamstress hems them for me.
Thanks for your input! Skinnies are trickier then non-skinnies, me thinks..

cute shoes ;)
as for the pants, I would make it about an inch shorter and also tailor the legs to be narrower as well... coz usually when I got mine done, they lost their proportion and came out not as slim once hemmed.
ps. the length you'got here is also good tho.

Thanks for the tips and the input. I think the leg is more of a slim straight leg then an actual skinny leg so there shouldn't be a problem with losing its proporation since it's the same width throughout.

great shoes by the way
since you said the leg is more of a straight than skinny, i would suggest you go probably about half an inch longer. i think the hem of the pants should at least hit the top of the shoe and cover it a little bit. it looks a little neater.

I just had a pair of jeans hemmed, and another that needs hemming, so I can totally relate. I think whatever length you have on your left foot is right. For skinnier pants, it just looks better hemmed at the ankle. Otherwise, it bunches up and will hide those pretty shoes..

I think for skinnier pants, only jeans sometimes look okay bunched up. These pants bunch once it hits the shoe and look funny.

I always like to hem pants very short—ankle-length—if I'm wearing them with interesting heels, because I like the shoes to be on display. I'm sure no one will agree with me.
Except maybe you, given that you posted a photo that has the pants folded right about where I'd have them hemmed if they were mine.

I think I may experiment with going a quarter inch longer as K-line suggested. Slim fitting pants are tricky though. I don't when they get bunchy over the shoe, or if it goes over my heel and ends up pulling at the front because there isn't enough fabric to flow down nicely. However, with wide leg pants, I definitely would go for a longer hem especially with heels.
