Thrifty Thrift
Tuesday, January 29, 2008 8:24 PM
It's been a while since I last went thrifting (October 2007 to be more precise) so this afternoon I took a gander at my nearest Value Village.
This time out, I was mostly impressed with the selection of teacups and saucers, but without a place to call my own I set each one back down on the shelf.
Instead I left a store with a $2.99 perfect-for-summer purse and a $3.99 pale yellow dress similar to some I've been staring at lately on eBay.

The dress needs a little bit of work -- the mini shoulder pads have to go. My shoulders are quite straight and broad as it is. Also, I want to see if I can shorten the dress to my knees without ruining the hem.

The dress is really lovely, great find!
And I miss Value Village so much :-(
Last summer I went on Vacation to Canada (Montreal, Toronto, Mississauga, Quebec, Niagara Falls) and I visited the Value Village in every city. It is really cheap and there is so many choice..

Amazing dress, your thrift store is great. My town is still behind with thrift store, but they are a good option to have "unique" items.

Thanks, though I'm not usually this lucky. I rarely find clothes because most of the stuff I like is almost always too big. However, I often have some luck with bags.

Yes yes definitely enjoyed Canada! I really want to go back there, and my bf and I discussed living there when we are totally 'grown up' haha
Holland is just getting to small, there are too much people in this small country. You can't drive without staying in a traffic jam, in the morning can't sit in the train because the trains are just too crowded etc etc.
I love that Canada is so wide and has a lot of nature and space. And all the shops are so big, even the parking places are 2 times bigger than in Holland haha. I can't go on like this for about an hour but I'll stop haha
And yesss I did buy a lot at Value Village and at Fripe Prix! here you can check my purchases from that holiday:

Wow, you found some amazing pieces! I love the Bally wedges. I'll have to check out the Niagara Falls store next time I'm down that way.
I've never been to Holland so I can't compare and it sounds like you spent most of your time in Montreal (I clicked on some of your older posts from the shopping post), but as for the big parking spaces and such.. I hate all the big box stores they've been building over here! & the trains in Toronto definitely get packed during morning and afternoon rush hour.
I guess you only spent a day in Toronto? What did you see here? If you didn't get the chance to, next time you should go to Kensington Market. There's a street of vintage clothing shops, although the prices are not thrift store prices. But I think you'll enjoy spending an afternoon browsing. There's also some cute cafés and towards the north end are specialized groceries stores (ie. butcher shop, fish store, cheese shop, spice stores), which can get a little stinky sometimes :P
PS. Your walk-in closet room is amazing!! So envious!

Thank you!!
That's true, we stayed in Montreal at my bf's family so that's where I've seen the most things.
I guess it what you are used to, if you always see the small shops you want to go to the bigger and visaversa :p
Yep we stayed 2 days in Mississauga at other family of my bf so one day we went downtown Toronto. We went to Chinatown and a regular shopping street along Chinatown (with one vintage shop!). In that street there was also a recording studio or something for the canadian television, maybe then you know where it is!
Kensington market sounds good! Definitely going to discover Toronto better next time :D

The grass is always greener on the other side ;)
It sounds like you went to Queen Street West. There's a TV studio there and on the ground floor is the studio for Much Music (our version of MTV, although now we have MTV Canada as well). If you continue west on Queen West (past Spadina Avenue -- Spadina is where Chinatown is), there's a bunch of independent boutiques and local designers. Also, Kensington Market is right behind Chinatown. next time!

Yes that's where I've been.
But we didn't stay long because my father in law got a little bit dizzy so we went back home :(
I really hope to go back soon!!
Thank you for the nice chat :-D
